  The Sin Eaters Angel

  By Nikki Prince

  Chapter One

Caj was not afraid of her, a being who equaled his will and strength. What he was afraid of was that she would leave. That this would be the last time he ever looked at her again. Never trust an angel. Only pain and suffering could come from such…devotion and love. Their love is too pure for the likes of one who takes on sin. The words echoed through his mind, long lost words of a sin eater from the past. One who’d know what it meant to have loved and truly loss.

What the hell did he know about love? He knew a lot. He knew that it was a feeling that was beyond compare. It was a feeling that most lived and died for. God he’d been reduced to arguing with himself. It had been centuries since he’d even touched on such emotion. He lived through others and enjoyed the thrill that their desires aroused in him. It kept him wanting for something more. Although more than anything his need for her overrode everything else.

She was his only chance to feel something other than the blackness of sin. He was a sin eater. He took in the sins of others so that they would die a sweet death and be able to go through the pearly gates. She on the other hand escorted them through gates that he might never see. He after all had been cursed and doomed to this fate of taking on others pain, anguish and yes their evil. Mercy, his beautiful sweet divine Mercy. There was always the thought that she deserved better than he could ever offer. Better than him. He watched her as he always had done.

Mercy stood off in the far corner of the room. She was standing by the girl’s family as they prayed for forgiveness for their loved one. She had beautiful mocha colored skin, long raven hair that curled just right. She was in a pair of jeans and a blouse. Another myth destroyed. They didn’t wear robes. Nor did she resemble a fat cherub with a diaper and wings. He wasn’t in an all-black robe resembling the grim reaper without a scythe.

They wore whatever apparel was in at the time. She was a beauty. While he, was scarred from his choices. He hid in the darkest reaches of the room, not wanting her to see him. Not yet. He’d be lying if he said that every time was harder. No it wasn’t hard to eat their sins. It was hard when it came time to do so and she was there. He didn’t want her pity. He hated that she saw what he’d become. He’d once been human a human that she could love. Now he was just a thing that fed from the sins of others.

It wasn’t as if she’d ever said anything but she witnessed his cursed life every time he had a duty to fulfill. He had no clue what would lift it. Just once he wanted to see her eyes burning with passion and not with sympathy. He wanted to know her touch again, to taste her lips against his own. No more dreaming of it, he wanted the reality. Such a memory was a lifetime ago. There was a time when she’d felt more than pity for him. Wasn’t there?

He felt Dirge’s presence before he’d even seen him. Stiffening his shoulders he prepared himself for the mental attack that was to come.

“Still thinking that if you just screw her everything will be okay? You lost your chance at that sweet thing long ago.”

It wasn’t that, what Dirge said which set him on edge so much. It was the fact that Dirge could be right. Maybe he had lost his chance to be with her to feel once more what he had in the past with her.

“Shut the fuck up, Dirge. Do your duty and leave me be.”

Dirge chuckled and moved to stand beside Mercy. Mercy only turned slightly and Caj saw her nod her head in Dirge’s direction. Wailing filled the room and it was obvious that the girl was slipping away. Dirge moved seamlessly between the roomful of mourners his very presence the catalyst for the mournful outcry.

The room soon became a cacophony of wails the sound tearing at his heart. Lament, pain and agony, those were the emotions in the room. Dirge survived off such. Where Caj hated what his duty represented Dirge could almost orgasm off of it all. Dirge had been at this for centuries. This was a walk in the park for him; as much as Caj hated his job Dirge loved his. The only saving grace for Caj was that he knew without his duty, the souls of many would be lost.

And then it hit him and he pulled out of his reverie. Mercy, she was signaling to him that it was time for him to perform his onus. She didn’t need words to get his attention. All that was needed was her thinking of him. Caj, your presence is required. She spoke into his dead soul. Her call was the only thing that could shut out all other sound and make the blackness turn to light. He pulled his form from obscurity moving slowly towards her he couldn’t do anything other than that. If she weren’t an angel he’d think she was a siren her call was so sweet.

“I’m here Mercy.” He didn’t speak into her mind though he could have. He preferred talking to her like this as it always caused her to speak to him. Her voice was a sweet melody.

“It’s time Caj. It’s time for you to take away her sins, so that she can ask forgiveness and go through the gates.”

Gates he’d never get to see. Though she spoke of his duty her words always had a way of making him feel like she’d caressed him. He nodded and took his place at the girl’s side; taking her hand in his he closed his eyes murmuring ancient words. He brushed his fingers over her flaxen hair trying to soothe her as she struggled with her fear.

They all had it, that moment when they knew they were dying the fear came over them like gangbusters. He blanketed her in those words until her ragged breathing began to even. Though the humans that were in the room couldn’t see him, he knew she could. Her hand tightened in his, flexing.

  “I’m scared.”

“Don’t be little one. Once I’ve taken your sins, all will be forgiven and the beautiful angel behind me…will guide you home.”

  “But I don’t want to leave…”

“You have to. There is no room for you here.”

“Please, I haven’t had my own children, I never married.”

“I understand more than you know. This life isn’t for you and perhaps the Maker has another life for you to experience.”

“I can have another life?” The girl’s eyes shone with hope.

“Yes another life possibly if it’s the Maker’s will…another time to get it right.”

“But will I remember this life?” She was searching for assurance from him. He wouldn’t give her false hope. There was a good chance that she could try again but there was also the chance that this was it for her.

“Perhaps, that my dear is up to God. While a chance at another life is a
miracle in itself. So even if you don’t remember this life, you will have a chance for a wonderful new one.”

He watched as she swallowed hard. A woman placed a crust of bread on the girl’s chest and then she was handed a mug of what would be ale. It was the usual practice. Humans were always melding the old and the new together making their own religion.

He shook his head as an old shaman shuffled in and the family parted away from the bed to give him room. This was their sin eater. Little did they know the old man had no such power that the true sin eater was there and present. The old man in the black robes grabbed the ale and chugged it down and then ate the bread. Once again the room filled with mournful wails, edged on by Dirge.

  “Is it time?”

“Yes, it’s time. Close your eyes and relax your mind. You’re being called home.”

“Home…yes I want to go home. Thank you.” By this time the little girl’s breathing was shallow almost stilted but she still thanked him. That tugged at Caj’s heart.

Caj felt the girl’s hand flex in his once more, he closed his eyes as well and every sin that she’d ever committed began to pour slowly from her body and into his. He tensed and braced himself not having to open his eyes to know that a blackish smoke left the girls mouth and made its way to him. Caj opened his mouth and breathed in deeply so that every last sin that was hers became his.

“Are you an angel?” The girl said to him.

Caj looked into her eyes and smiled. She was at ease; the pain she’d once been feeling was gone. She was ready. He shook his head. “No, but do you see the beautiful angel at my side?

The little girl nodded her head to his question.

“Her name is Mercy and she’s an angel and will take you where you need to go. Are you ready?”

“My name is Mina…and yes. I’m ready for the next adventure. Thank you…I don’t hurt anymore. What is your name?”

“My name is Caj. Harmony and love be with you little Mina.”

Caj gave her a soft smile and just when he was about to stand Mina raised her hand and stroked her fingers over the scar that covered his left eye.

  “Thank you, Caj.”

“You’re very welcome. Go with peace Mina.”

Mercy moved over to his side and held her hand out to Mina and he watched as the girl gripped Mercy’s hand and then a glow covered them both. Mercy gently coaxed Mina’s spirit out and then they were gone. Caj gave one last look at the others in the room who had no clue what had happened in truth but would believe what they’d done had worked.

He shook his head, humans truly had no clue how the world worked. He’d let them believe their reality because the truth would be too hard for them to handle and it wasn’t his place to tell. He already missed Mercy but she was in a place that he couldn’t go or ever hope to be a part of.

  Chapter Two

She found him sitting in the grass on a lonely hill that overlooked the city. This was where he always went. She knew that after a child died it was particularly hard for him to deal with his job. On one hand he helped Mina get to where she needed to go, but on the other he didn’t understand why one so young had to die.

He’d told her a long time ago about the first child whose sins he’d had to take on. It cut him deep and till this day he could always be found at this particular place. At a certain age children remained innocent, but Mina had passed that age and Caj had, had to deal with it.

Mercy settled next to him, folding her large black wings against her back until they disappeared. She didn’t say anything she just enclosed herself within the silence of his making. Caj was a talker and if he was brooding something was wrong. So she waited until he opened up. It took a little bit longer this time and then he turned to her. She could see the weariness in his eyes.

“What can I do to help?” She said softly as she reached out a hand to stroke over his arm lightly. She could feel the muscles there tense, he was so strong. It was times like this that made it hard they were on the path that they were on.

  “Talk to me.” She whispered.

“What is there to say, Mercy? It doesn’t get any easier especially when it’s the young ones that are leaving.”

“You help them Caj. You alone stop them from going to hell.”

“Yes and I take on all the pain and chaos from those sins.”

“You do something great, something no one else can do for them.”

“Yes and they get to go to heaven where as I am stuck here for the giver of life knows how long.”

Therein laid the gist of the whole matter, Caj didn’t know when or even if his punishment would end. While he healed those who were dying enabling them to go before the Maker sinless he carried it all and may never know true freedom.

“Let me give you some healing of my own.”

Mercy was privy to the fact that when a Sin Eater took on the sins of someone they also took the agony of those sins on with them. They didn’t gain the pleasure that one would think from it. That time for pleasure had long passed with the one who’d done the sinning.

She didn’t give him a chance to say anything, she quickly straddled his lap, cupping the back of his neck and bringing her mouth slowly to his. She teased her lips over his kissing him deeply.

He stiffened against her for a moment but then she felt his arms wrap about her waist and he drew her close. A good sign, a very good sign that he wanted what she wanted. With a groan he pulled back and pressed his forehead to hers, still holding her tightly.

“Mercy you don’t have to do this.”

“Caj I know what I don’t have to do. I want to do this. I want you just as much as you want me.”

She could still see the pain behind his eyes and she wanted more than anything to take that hurt away from him.

“You deserve more than just a fuck on a hill, Mercy.”

She giggled softly. “Yes I do and I’m going to get that from you at some point. But we are here, right now and it’s perfect. Besides this won’t be the first time you fucked me. Remember?”

Oh he remembered all right it was what he thought of day in and day out. It had been so long ago though, before he’d become a death angel. An angel unlike Mercy, he was wingless and a less glorified member of the seraphs. Caj tangled his fingers in her hair and she sighed.

“You don’t have to do this.”

“Stop stating the obvious, you said that already.” She grinned at him. “You think I don’t know that? This isn’t a pity fuck Caj. I’ve wanted you a long time. You’ve wanted me. We will work out the details later.”

“Those are very wicked and salacious words for an angel.” He chuckled.

She grinned. “There’s more where that came from. While I’m hoping that I don’t have to keep talking.” She wiggled her eyebrows at him.

She had him at that moment, she saw it. She smiled and leaned in meeting him halfway as their lips met in a less urgent kiss. She groaned as he tugged at her bottom lip with his teeth, and then licked over it. Cupping his face, she stroked his cheeks gently. It was wonderful to touch him, finally. Caj drew in a deep breath and she pressed her forehead to his.

They’d done enough dancing around what they both wanted and needed. No more. He was too hard on himself. The reason for his fall out of grace was old news. He needed to embrace the present time and she was going to make sure he did that. She pulled back and looked into his eyes and she saw the moment of no return and smiled.

“Mercy I’m going to fuck you.”

“I know and I’m going to let you.” If he’d expected her to back down he’d be sadly mistaken. She’d wanted him just as long and now that she had him where she wanted him, she was going to take it and run.

She groaned as he pulled her close, his hands at her hips. He leaned in again and he kissed her his lips greedy. She felt the tug of his hands in her hair as he snatched it backwards, teasing her with light licks from his tongue. He parted the kiss and she looked into his eyes.

  “Mercy, I
” His dark eyes swirled with emotion and there was on particular emotion she wasn’t ready for. Not yet at least.

“No Caj, don’t speak just feel. That’s all you need to do in this moment. I won’t hold you to anything else. Can you do that for me? Just live in this very moment and take what we both so desperately need?” She didn’t want to hear him try to explain why they shouldn’t be doing what they were doing.

It was almost like her clothes melted away as he slowly stripped her. Caj began undoing the buttons of her blouse. He was going so slow Mercy figured it was because he wanted to let her say no if the need arose. It never would. She wouldn’t allow it.

“You do know you can go faster, right Caj?” Mercy questioned. She sighed as he stopped undoing the buttons. This was going to take forever. She smirked as he smiled and she knew he was all about teasing her.

“Yes, I know, but I want to savor you. I’ve wanted you so long that if I go to fast...”

  “You’ll come to fast?”

“Damn, girl you’re so damn unexpected.”

“Yes, you think because I’m an angel that I have to talk all prim and proper?”

  “Well don’t you?”

She burst out laughing. “Hmm obviously not, or I wouldn’t be here letting you have your wicked way with me.”

“Well I guess that is true.”

She gasped softly as he pulled open her shirt after undoing the last of the buttons and pressed his face to her bared skin. He kissed her stomach and then nipped her.

“Mmm.” She moaned softly. Mercy placed her hands in his hair bringing him closer. He felt so good.

  “You like that?”

“I don’t just like it, I love it Caj.” She whimpered when he nipped her in the same spot. It stung so good and she felt the wetness between her thighs just from his biting and the anticipation of what she knew was going to happen. She sighed deeply as he nipped her again and arched her body into his mouth.

“More…” She sounded breathless to her own ears.
